The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has published a new I-9 Form for Employment Eligibility Verification. The new form is mandatory effective May 7, 2013. From March 8, 2013 until May 7, 2013 employers may use the old or the new versions of the I-9 Forms. After May 7, 2013, all employers must use the new form to verify employment eligibility for new hires. The new Form I-9 is available through the USCIS website at http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf. USCIS has also issued a new version of the Handbook for Employers (M-274) that includes helpful information on I-9 compliance. The new Handbook is available through the USCIS website at http://uscis.gov/files/form/m-274.pdf.
Employers do not need to complete new I-9 forms for current employees for whom there is already a properly completed I-9 form on file, unless re-verification applies.
